My Freshman Backpack

My Freshman Backpack Im not new to the blogs (though we do have some wicked bloggers up in the sphere nowadays), but my recent, unintended hiatus might have confused you into thinking that I am. Nope, Im just a sophomore thats going to MIT and that has been doing this bloggin business for a while. Id like you to meet someone new, though This is my gigantic freshman backpack. Made worse by the fact that I dropped five pounds from that bag, since it doesnt have my laptop in it at that pictured moment (Yes, I am a sophomore now. Yes, I havent heard that term since high school.) (Or, actually, since last week, when a friend of mine from Tufts said I had a freshman backpack.) I try to let that roll off my shoulders, burdened as they may be by a brobdingnagian  backpack. See, sometimes, whats practical isnt exactly, well, chic. Case in point: You may have seen this phrased in a different way: If it looks stupid, but it works, it aint stupid. Such is the case with my beloved backpack. I pack my life into my bag each morning, because having my Organic Chemistry textbook on me keeps the small (but significant) downtime between classes a little bit more productive. For those of you who cant conceive of inventing time travel, this might be the next best thing to help keep yourself abreast of your commitments. It seems weird to think that, for some students here, MIT gives you a sink-or-swim style remedial course on study skills. In actuality, not everyone has to study intensely through high school in order to get in. Personally, aside from mandatory homework that was assigned almost daily for my courses, I did no additional reading, no additional practice until it was the night before a big test, when I shored myself up in my room, with pages of notes strewn on my bed and my person, where I dedicated a few hours to poring over everything that I needed to know. For me, that was more than enough. If you did that in high school, and it worked, good for you. But the odds are very good that it wont work out as well any more. Many exams will be scheduled close together, sometimes on the same day. There have definitely been days when Ive had two in one day, and possibly three. Whats worse, one of those exams in your freshman year will likely be in a course you might not like or care much about, since you tend to spend most of your time knocking down GIRs prior to declaring a major. Also, theyre MIT exams, which scales up the difficulty. Of course, this will all matter so much less in your first semester (which is still pass/no record), and to a lesser degree in your second semester (A/B/C/no record), but if you elect to take early sophomore standing by semester two (or once you become a sophomore the regular way), that safety net vanishes. By then, youll have to adapt. So I guess for now, keep these hints in the back of your mind. If your high school / current coursework is particularly challenging, or even if youre currently at MIT and you want to make sure you pass your classes, this might even be of use to you right away: Spread out your studying so youre not just doing everything the night before.  It saves you a lot of stress, since you wont worry about missing a detail or a definition if you allow yourself more time to do it. Being stressed will just make you less able to remember what you are trying to commit to memory, and then youll end up doing worse because of it. Aim for a good nights sleep if theres something important the next day. If youre nodding off during an exam, youll be spending some time and effort just keeping yourself awake, and thatll be inefficient when you end up working. Ask for help! From your TAs, from your professors, from people in S^3 (if it pertains to getting good academic habits down), from your wing-mates, suite-mates and dorm-mates. Dont feel bad about asking upperclassmen, either, as Anna has said before. If you can, spread out your workload, too. This is the approach Im taking. I have some gaps that I can fill in between classes, which, as a sophomore, are bigger than they were in my freshman year. But even as a freshman, if you can spare an hour or two earlier in the day cranking out some pset problems when youre not doing anything else, thats time that you wont be spending much later at an ungodly hour of the night. To me, this also reflects another significant principle: that of working smart, and how its not always the same as working hard. Take breaks. Remember, work smart, dont just work hard. Burning out isnt fun and no amount of mocha frappuchinos can make you entirely happy again :( Be ready to revise your approach and to throw out what isnt working. This is the most important part. In fact, you could call it a corollary to that folksy wisdom that I dispensed above: If its stupid, and it isnt working, then for your purposes, at least its stupid. If what youre doing isnt paying off, try something else. If you dont know what to try, see the third hint and solicit some advice that way. It may be a reason for a lower number of vegetarian people live in the society. Animal produced for food can benefit the environment. They also think that, wastes are created by animal which are decomposed by land and the process of decomposing releases necessary minerals and nutrients, so that the next generation of plant life and other living organisms can be benefited from them. Though meat is good for health, according to the critics, when erosion on farmland is not check properly and timely manner, so much topsoil can fade away that, that’s why most of the farmland can no longer be used to grow crops. They embrace America as their own country and they are familiar with the US. more than the countries that they were born in. Moreover young undocumented immigrants who grow up in America more likely to eager to push themselves to be nearly as American. Education is what makes them move to the middle class, to be Americanized . Although, the road for young undocumented immigrants had been impossible to reach, but the government has been introduced the policy that makes young undocumented students’ lives more reality which are â€Å"DACA and DREAMS Act†. DACA and DREAM act are the policies that have good benefits to young undocumented immigrants, however, there are downsides to this two policies that could harm immigrants who live in America illegally. There are numerous ethical issues that a medical assistant may encounter in a daily office or hospital setting. It is unethical to have a conversation with a fellow coworker regarding a patient. The patient may overhear or worse they may be related to someone in the office. It is no one’s business as to why the patient had an appointment. Another unethical behavior that is unacceptable is foul language in front of the patients. They do not need to hear that kind of language under any circumstances. When a patient comes in to see you and smells of urine or alcohol, be courteous to the patient and do not judge the patient. This patient may not have the means to shower daily or they may be sick and are unaware of the odor. A good thing to remember when dealing with an ethical issue is always do the right thing at the right time and it will never become an issue. Medical Assistants need to put themselves into the shoes of the patient. They need to ask themselves, how would I want to be treated? How would I like to be recognized in the eyes of the health care worker? How would I want my family treated? In doing this little experiment on a daily basis they will come to realize that we all are human and need to be treated equally, no matter what the situation may be. The general skills of a Medical Assistant consist of basic customer service. They must be able to communicate between the doctors and the patients. They need to do this within the legal and ethical boundaries. Document every conversation because if it is not documented then the conversation never happened. Educate the patient within the scope of practice. Let the patient know of community resources for future reference of patients’ needs. Operational functions are also a part of the daily duties of a Medical Assistant. Performing inventory of supplies and equipment so items can be replenished. Doing these functions will always help in maintaining the highest quality of care for the patient. Clinical skills of the CMA of general patient care to make them as comfortable as possible. Many diagnostic procedures are required of the CMA; from collecting specimens to performing radiology tests. Fundamental principles consisting of sterilizing rooms and equipment are skills that a CMA will do daily. Doing these clinical skills while practicing standard precautions must be a high priority for everyone in the health care facility. Administrative skills are essential for a CMA to do the job that is required of them. It is all done via computer so there typing skills must be adequate for them to succeed. From patient schedules to bookkeeping to insurance forms, all is done on a daily basis. Licensure is when a government agency authorizes individuals to work in a job. A CMA does not need a license to work. Professions needing licenses are nurses and therapists. Registration is a professional organization in a specific health care field that administers exams and/or maintains a list of qualified individuals. CMA’s can apply for a registration credential. This would give them a better paying job and more responsibilities at their present facility. Certification involves the issuing of a certificate and credentials by a professional organization to someone who has met the experience and education guidelines of that organization. This basically tells everyone that you have finished your schooling for Medical Assisting. For a Medical Assistant to maintain his/her certification they must recertify either by passing the CMA exam again or by receiving sixty recertification points, thirty of which must be AAMA approved CEU’s. The points must be as follows 10 administrative, 10 clinical, 10 general and 30 from any combination of the above three categories. You must also submit proof (photocopy of the card and length of program) of current, provider level CPR certification. Continuing education units (CEU’s) can be received by reading online books and taking a test when finished. The AAMA sponsors many workshops, seminars, and county, state, and national conferences for MA’s to remain current in their field and earn the CEU’s. For the safety of the patient and employee, an MA should never perform any tasks that are outside the scope of the MA practice. Outside the scope of a Medical Assistant’s practice would be suturing a wound, administering a pap test for a female patient, or possibly giving the patient the diagnosis of the symptoms they are experiencing. A physician should never delegate the full range of physical therapy to anyone other than a physical therapist. Under no circumstances should the Medical Assistant do any duties that are outside their scope of practice. If I were approached by my supervisor to perform outside of my scope of practice, I would calmly and rationally refuse the request. I do not feel that any job is worth losing if you are asked to perform it wrong. I would explain to my supervisor politely that I am not qualified to perform the task asked and I would suggest someone else in the facility that is capable. The disciplinary results that could happen to the medical assistant are far greater than the prestige of stating you are who you are not. State disciplinary actions can result in fines and other criminal penalties. All office personnel should avoid referring to the medical assistant as a nurse also not just the patient. I like to compare it to the checks and balances system that our government has had in place since its birth.
